Poison that induces fatal internal bleeding
in rats; neutralized with sodium hydroxide,
it is used in medicine as an anticoagulant:
it prevents blood clotting by inhibiting the
action of vitamin K. It can be taken orally
and begins to act several days after the
initial dose. Warfarin is a crystalline
powder, C19H16O4. Heparin may be given in
treatment at the same time and discontinued
when warfarin takes effect. It is often given
as a preventive measure, to reduce the risk
of thrombosis or embolism after major
surgery.
